Nietzsche

 Battle not with monsters
lest you become a monster
and if you gaze into the abyss
the abyss gazes into you.
            -Friedrich Nietzsche

Battle not with monsters, lest you become one.
Battle not the foul goblins and demons of our world, neither the ones within nor the ones without. Step aside for them, Nietzsche, let them pass and do as they please. Watch them as they creep over the cliffs, and do not dare go near the edge, for the unknown holds naught but terror, and there is no light by which we can pierce the blackness.
I don't think so Nietzsche. What a sweet little notion this is, how delicate and fragile your soul must be, for it to be so easily overwhelmed by only the edge. You don't seem to understand life. You don't seem to understand what a fine line it is the everyday liver walks. You must be tired, Nietzsche, always running, running, running, never stopping, for the edge is ever on your heels. How desperate you must be to escape it.
But it is not with the edge that you have confused me today, that you have made yourself such an easy target for ridicule. No, it is with your monsters that you have made me tilt my head in confusion. I would not think there was a dignified man alive who would admit so easily to cowardice, to complicity. Those holes in your soul are not from battle, Nietzsche, there are no war-wounds under your skin.
Tell me, Nietzsche, do those monsters stop when they see you toss your sword and shield to the side? Do they smile and stand next to you and pat you on the head and praise you for being a good boy? They do not, Nietzsche, and you know they don't. Those monsters you do not battle continue on, and conquer with no resistance.
